Quanti tra i cantanti internazionali non hanno mai sognato di vincere un Grammy Awards? Quello che è tuttora il più prestigioso riconoscimento musicale per artisti, album e singoli di ogni categoria. La prima edizione, organizzata nel 1959 vide trionfare subito Domenico Modugno con “Nel blu dipinto di blu”, che vinse come “disco dell’anno” e “canzone dell’anno” nonostante fosse un successo del 1958.

Il Premio Grammy, o Grammy Award, è un premio tra i più importanti degli Stati Uniti. Assegnato per i risultati conseguiti nel settore della musica, viene generalmente considerato come l’equivalente dei premi Oscar nel mondo del cinema. Originariamente chiamato Gramophone Award, è presentato dalla National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (detta anche Recording Academy), una associazione di artisti e tecnici statunitensi coinvolti nell’industria musicale.

Grammy Awards, Billboard Awards e American Music Awards sono i tre principali riconoscimenti musicali statunitensi.

I Grammy vengono consegnati per 105 diverse categorie di contributi, suddivise rispetto a 30 generi musicali. Come nel caso degli Oscar, la scelta del vincitore è affidata a una votazione di esperti (in questo caso i membri della Recording Academy). Il nome dei Grammy si riferisce al trofeo consegnato al vincitore – una statuetta che rappresenta un grammofono, realizzata a mano dalla Billings Artworks.

La cerimonia di consegna dei premi coinvolge nomi celebri del mondo della musica, e la consegna dei premi più importanti viene solitamente trasmessa in diretta televisiva (al momento, i diritti per la TV americana sono in mano alla rete CBS).

Secondo alcuni,[chi?] la giuria dei Grammy tende a votare in modo troppo conservatore, basandosi più sulla fama degli artisti votati che su elementi strettamente tecnici e artistici. Di conseguenza, alcuni musicisti ostentano una certa indifferenza per questo premio.[senza fonte] In effetti, alcuni fra i più celebri musicisti della storia (per esempio Elvis Presley, Elton John, i Pink Floyd, i Rolling Stones, i Queen, i Led Zeppelin, i Genesis o Bob Marley) hanno ricevuto pochissimi premi Grammy.

Possono essere candidati al premio i dischi pubblicati in un arco di tempo che va dal 1º ottobre di due anni prima al 30 settembre dell’anno precedente, risultando rispetto ai premi Oscar di scadenza più arretrata. Questo ha fatto sì che, per esempio, il film biografico su Ray Charles abbia vinto l’Oscar nel 2005, ma la colonna sonora abbia ottenuto il Grammy solo nell’edizione del 2006.
